Henri de TOULOUSE-LAUTREC

Henri de TOULOUSE-LAUTREC

After the great successes of Kandinsky and Renoir, Palazzo Roverella is preparing to turn the spotlight on a great French artist, one of the most representative of turn-of-the-century Paris: Henry Toulouse-Lautrec.

The exhibition, curated by Jean-David Jumeau-Lafond, Francesco Parisi and Fanny Girard, with the collaboration of Nicholas Zmelty, will be open from 23 February to 30 June 2024. 60 of the artist’s more than 200 works in total evoke the liveliness of the Parisian art scene.

An unusual exhibition, which aims to fascinate the spectator, going beyond the approach that often reduces Toulouse-Lautrec to the sole activity of poster creator, thus highlighting his activity as a painter, with paintings and pastels from important American and European museums, as well as French ones. The aim is to reconstruct the Parisian environment in which the artist worked by comparing him with the realists, impressionists and symbolists with whom he shared everyday life experiences.

In addition to the artist’s famous posters, affiches, paintings and preparatory drawings are placed side by side in a dialectical relationship with the works of the numerous artists who were active at the same time in the same circles and who often dealt with the same themes.

A previously unseen section will be devoted to the French art movement “Les Arts Incohérents”, forerunners of many of the techniques adopted by 20th century avant-gardes such as Dadaism. All the works of the group, which had been lost for over a century, were rediscovered in 2018 and the Rovigo exhibition is the first opportunity to admire them again.

This is an unmissable opportunity not only to visit the exhibition at Palazzo Roverella, but also to spend a weekend discovering the historical and artistic heritage of Rovigo and the many villages not far away, where you can find villas-palaces, museums large and small, sacred places without forgetting nature and the flavours of land and water that the ‘Land between Adige and Po’ knows how to offer with taste and spirit.
